9 Meeting Facilitation Skills for Managers to Practice
9 Meeting Facilitation Skills for Managers to Practice9 Meeting Facilitation Skills for Managers to PracticeMeetings can either be opportunities to share ideas, discuss challenges and define action plans, or they can end up as unproductive time wasters. Unfortunately, managers are often the major contributors to meeting process dysfunction. You need skills to run meetings properly. Strengthening Your Meeting Facilitation Skills By definition, facilitating means, To make easier or less difficult help forward. For a manager to facilitate a meeting (instead of running it), they need to be willing to let go of their power and be open to different outcomes and approaches. Where Managers Go Wrong With Meetings Many managers think they know how to run a meeting. They set the agenda, do all of the talking, and make all of the decisions. While this may feel easy and efficient for managers, its often a waste of peoples time, and it doesnt tap into the creative potential of the gruppe. I n fact, it has the opposite effect as employees tend to withdraw, deferring to the manager who wants to be in charge. Why Managers Fail to Involve Employees Many reasons exist for why managers dont involve their employees more in meetings. While the first three items below are behaviors of poor managers, the brde one, facilitation skills, can be learned and strengthened with practiceFear of letting goThe false belief that because they are in charge, they need to provide all of the answersA lack of confidence in the abilities or problem-solving skills of their employeesA lack of meeting facilitation skills These ideas for managers at all levels will strengthen their meeting facilitation skills in support of improving meeting productivity. Skills Managers Need to Facilitate Meetings Proper meeting facilitation involves getting everyone at the meeting involved in identifying and solving problems. Teams will almost always develop better, more creative solutions than any manager coul d alone. Teams are also more likely to support the implementation of the solutions they helped create. You can break these meeting facilitation skills down into three different categories Planning a MeetingConducting a MeetingResolving Meeting Problems How to Plan a Meeting Before you begin any meeting you need an agenda. For a collaborative meeting, invite meeting attendees to tell you what problems the gruppe needs to solve or what changes the team needs to pursue. Make sure the topics are ones that allow for group participation. Facilitating a meeting is different than presenting information at a meeting. 1. Enable Group Involvement Make sure you allow ample time for group involvement and that you dont try to solve too many problems in a short time period. However, too much time can also result in an endless cycle of well what about.... Make sure your agenda meets the time allotted for the meeting. Skills needed include these. Group Facilitation SkillsMeeting PlanningProblem SolvingDecision MakingAgenda Development 2. Make Sure You Provide Proper Logistics Choose your meeting location and time carefully. If you try to cram 15 people into a conference room with six chairs, the meeting will be a disaster. When people are uncomfortable, cant see each other, cant hear, or are hungry, meeting results will suffer. Learn how to use logistics as a way to encourage great participation and remove barriers. You need to plan all of this in advance. Sending someone out mid-meeting to order sandwiches makes your meeting less effective. Logistics planning involves these skills. Logistics Planning and ExperienceDecision MakingThoughtful Consideration of the Needs of Others 3. Recording the Meeting Minutes The last critical part of planning a meeting is the meeting minutes. Who will take them? Who will distribute them? If you dont have a designated administrative person, consider doing them yourself or rotate the responsibility among the team members. If Jane did the m inutes last week, its Johns turn this week. If youre using a whiteboard or a flip chart to collect ideas, give the person writing enough time to document them correctly. Note-Taking SkillsDocumentation RelevanceUnderstanding Diversity and Inclusion How to Conduct a Meeting With your solid agenda, good location, and appropriate refreshments, you are ready for your meeting. To make your meeting a great working meeting (and not just an information dump), you will need to demonstrate appropriate meeting facilitation skills. To do this, you will want to focus on these three components of meeting facilitation. 1. Ask Questions Great questions stimulate great discussion. The article, 70 Awesome Coaching Questions Using the GROW Model, offers some outstanding discussion prompters. Ask questions to gain additional informationAsk questions to learn about different viewpointsAsk questions to note areas of agreement and disagreementAsk questions to confirm that you are really hearing exactl y what team members are contributingAsk questions to ascertain that you are sharing meaning with team members 2. Demonstrate Active Listening Active listening allows you to really and deeply know that you and the person you are listening to share meaning and have come to a thoughtful understanding of each others positions. When you paraphrase, check for understanding, and ask follow-up questions, it encourages more participation and keeps the discussion flowing. Make head nodding and other appropriate gestures to indicate understandingRepeat what you heard back to the other party so that you know you share meaningAsk questions to clarify anything you are uncertain aboutAsk follow-up questions to further expand your understandingUse words such as ah-ha, yes, I understand, and the like to indicate understanding 3. Lead a Proper Brainstorming Session Most people think they already know how to brainstorm. However, they usually dont. In too many settings, the effectiveness of brainstormi ng is reduced by poor process management, strong social or political pressures and poor facilitation skills. Many people have never truly experienced the power of a well-run brainstorming session. Practice effective facilitation skillsManage the introduction of ideas by participantsMake certain that all participants have an equal opportunity to speakManage competing conversations and people talking over one anotherDevise an effective way to narrow down the brainstormed choices to a manageable numberResolve any conflicts that arise How to Solve Problems in a Meeting The second type of meeting requires different meeting facilitation skills. You wouldnt need to meet if everyone already agreed on the solution. You come together to share information and develop answers and this means youll need to bring people together. Here are the skills youll need. 1. Consensus-Building Skills Consensus does not mean that everybody has to agree with a decision. It means that everyone has had an op portunity to share their perspectives (potentially by brainstorming) and propose ideas. Following this, the key to consensus is that all team members agree to support the direction even if it was not their original choice. Proper meeting facilitation will guide the group from idea sharing to the development of an effective decision.Reaching consensus takes more time, but will usually gain stronger buy-in from the group at large. However, remember that consensus is not the ultimate goal.An effective decision for the problem at hand is the most important issue. Consensus Decision Making Resource See A Six-Step Consensus Decision Making Framework for more on how to lead a team through a consensus decision-making process. 2. Conflict Resolution Skills Whenever there is a roomful of people involved in solving a problem, conflict is inevitable. In fact, conflict over the task or issue is viewed by team researchers as part of the process for effective decision-making. A manager must learn how to harness the power of conflict in a positive way. Manage the discussion to listen to all viewpointsLead the discussion to identify areas of agreement and disagreementUse facilitation skills to make certain participants feel heard out 3. Non-Verbal Communication Skills While researchers argue over the exact percentages, most would agree that more than 50% of communication is non-verbal. A manager needs to be able to read the groups tone and body language to assess their level of engagement, candor, and commitment.Your understanding of non-verbal communication can help see when there is true agreement versus spoken agreement just to finish the meeting.Be cognizant of body language as a way to experience the total communication voice of an individual or a team. The Bottom Line Time is a precious asset in life and at work. Strive to manage meetings for optimal efficiency and effectiveness. Learning, practicing and applying the nine facilitation skills identified above is a great p lace to start.

How to Overcome Hiring Challenges
How to Overcome Hiring ChallengesHow to Overcome Hiring ChallengesHiring challenges abound across many industries. There is already significant competition for the most skilled candidates - and with every new job created, that competition only increases. Job candidates today can afford to be very selective, and mora and more companies are dipping into the talent pool, thinning it with every new position they staff and making it that much more difficult on the next hiring manager. In fact, in a recent Robert Half survey of more than 2,800 senior managers in the U.S., respondents identified generating interest from qualified candidates as the most difficult aspect of the hiring process.Without question, successfully recruiting the right people today can require a huge amount of effort. But employers that take a smart and focused approach to tackling hiring challenges can still meet their staffing needs. The following five strategies can help improve your chances of finding good candida tes in good time1. Offer moreLets be honest Money talks. Salary isnt always the No. 1 factor candidates consider when deciding to take a new job, but its a big one. If you offer compensation thats below current market levels, you simply wont be able to compete for the top talent you need. When our survey asked senior managers to cite the most common reason prospective hires decide not to join their company, 3 in 10 said its because the compensation and benefits are lower than expected. Look to resources like Robert Halfs Salary Guides to ensure youre presenting pay packages that are in line with - or, ideally, above - what others in your market offer for particular positions and skill sets. (Use our Salary Calculator to adjust these salaries for your city.)GET THE SALARY GUIDE2. Add perksThe reality is that many of the best candidates fall into one of two categoriesThey are on the job hunt and weighing multiple employment offers. They already have a job and may not be actively searc hing for a new position.Either way, you have your work cut out for you. You must offer in-demand professionals a better deal than they have at their current employer or can find through a competitors job offer. How can you up the ante? Start by looking to the competition. What are other companies that seem to be snapping up talent offering new hires? Signing bonuses? Innovative employment benefits on par with Silicon Valley startups? A liberal telecommuting policy?Talk to contacts in your network and read the business press to see what you can learn about strategies that are working for others. A recruiting agency can also provide valuable insight because they are in constant communication with job seekers and employers. At the same time, dont hesitate to ask tauglichkeit hires directly what would convince them to join your company over another. Requesting that top candidates be frank with you about what they truly want gives you concrete information you can use to make the prospect o f joining your firm more appealing. You might even follow up with job seekers who rejected an offer from your firm. What made a competing offer more compelling? When conducting performance evaluations, ask current employees why they choose to stay with your firm. What aspects of working for the company do they enjoy or appreciate most? Their answers can clue you into factors - such as a strong commitment to staff training, a family-like company culture or an emphasis on work-life balance - that you should underscore to candidates throughout the hiring process.3. Move quickly (but not too quickly)Speed is essential if you want to overcome todays hiring challenges. Good candidates simply dont remain available for long. If it takes several weeks to review resumes, coordinate interviews, arrange skills testing and have all necessary parties sign off on a new hire, youll miss out every time.Do what you can to remove obstacles and bottlenecks from the hiring process. For examplePare down the number of people who interview candidates to only those who are absolutely essential. Asking colleagues who will not be working directly with the potential hire to take part only means more schedules to coordinate and more potential delays.Try to schedule interviews back to back so a candidate has to travel to your schreibstube just once or twice. You reduce downtime between interviews and make it easier to collect everyones feedback. You also reduce frustration on the part of the candidate, who may need to take time off work or arrange child care during the interview. Consider conducting video interviews if its difficult to arrange in-person meetings.Make sure the compensation package has been approved before you reach the final interview stage so you can extend an offer right away. One word of caution Dont move so quickly that you skip key steps in the hiring process. You still need to do your due diligence before bringing anyone on board. Take time to conduct thorough referenc e checks and assess whether the candidate is likely to thrive in your organizations workplace culture. Otherwise, you risk making a costly hiring mistake.HIRING? LET US HELP4. Be flexibleHeres an essential truth about the hiring market that surprises many employers Your ideal candidate may not exist. (This might mean some of the hiring challenges you currently face may be of your own creation.)A good analogy is buying a house. Your wish list for a home might include four bedrooms and three baths, a large yard, and a three-car garage. The house should also be in a good school district, close to parks or trails, and within walking distance of shops and restaurants. The reality is that youll likely have to compromise on one or more of these criteria, because no house checks every box on your list - or the few that do are outside your price range. When it comes to adding staff, think about what skills and qualifications are essential to completing the job duties and succeeding in the ro le. Focus on these when evaluating candidates, and consider anything else - an advanced degree or experience in your industry, for example - a nice-to-have.Also consider bringing in someone with less experience than you seek and training them on the job. It can be quite effective to hire promising entry-level and midlevel professionals, then give them tools and resources to quickly build the necessary skills or knowledge to succeed in the position.5. Have a backup plan to help overcome hiring challengesEven as you take pains to hurdle hiring challenges and bring skilled talent on board quickly, have a plan in place so youre not caught flatfooted if the hiring process drags on.In todays hot market, it sometimes takes weeks or even months to find the right person no matter how persistent and strategic you are. How will you manage workloads and prevent current employees from becoming overloaded during that period? Augmenting your team with temporary or project-based staff, or interim management consultants for senior-level roles, is one way to stay on top of business demands as you search for the right full-time hire. Paul McDonald Paul McDonald is senior executive director at Robert Half. He writes and speaks frequently on hiring, workplace and career management topics. Why the Post-Interview Waiting Game Takes So Damn Long
Why the Post-Interview Waiting Game Takes So Damn LongThe Post-Interview Waiting GameWhy the Post-Interview Waiting Game Takes So Damn LongSo, youve done everything right. You took your old resume, followed all the advice on this blog and elsewhere, and made it sizzle with both visual appeal and the essence of all you offer an employer. You also created a perfectly targeted cover letter that only a socially maladjusted cheese-eatin rat could reject. And then, after being called in for an vorstellungsgesprch, you aced it She shoots. She scores How could you miss? You had them eating out of your hands. You even got an extra-warm handshake from the CEO telling you he was definitely in your corner. Youre already imagining how to decorate your new cubicle and where to go for lunch with your new office buddies as you send your perfectly worded thank you notlagees. And then nothing You wait. A week passes. Still nothing. And another week. Silence. Maybe a few crickets. But nary a word from th e very people you assumed would be your new BFFs. Nada. Zilch. And so you begin to think about all the things you must have done wrong and you replay the interview endlessly in your mind, examining each excruciating detail. What was it? How could you have screwed up so badly? Oh the horror. The searing pain. And then you decide its not you at all. Its them And you get really, really mad. Horrible human beings making you suffer on purpose. Dont they know how heartless this is???But then the realization hits you like a cold hammer Its not just torture. Theyve rejected you outright and dont even have the courtesy to let you know. The very same people you already had Christmas gifts picked out forSo whats the real story?Let me take you behind closed doors and clue you in to what really might be going on. In some cases, the answer could be as simple as you didnt get the job and they didnt tell you. That happens. But there are many times when absolutely nothings wrong and it just takes long er than youd ever imagine. Sometimes months And its not about you at all or even them. Its (scary music plays) THE HIRING PROCESS.While you wait in agony for that crumb of communication, heres what might be going onSometimes HR controls all communication and that means people you write to are advised not to respond to individual candidates. Why? It could be a mandate from legal to prevent any miscommunication. (A poorly worded response from the company could be construed as an offer when none exists yet.) Or it could simply be HR wanting to call all the shots. It happens.Someone critical to the process (aka SCTTP) may be sick or called away. Why not work around the person? They could, but sometimes the company prefers to wait for the sake of continuity even if that means you wait too.Our SCTTP may suddenly have been put on a top-priority project thats taking all their time. Even if they said they want to hire quickly, the hiring process can get put on the back burner. Ive seen this many times. Our SCTTP has been fired or quit and must be replaced first. The department is going through a reorganization again. The job is being rethought and possibly needs to wait for HR to approve a reclassification. Why? Sometimes they find a specific candidate (maybe you) whose skills are even more suited to their needs than their original concept. Or they find two people they like and decide to split the job into two different positions.Hiring may require numerous people who did not interview you to sign off on various steps of the process. Meanwhile, you wait.Sometimes it simply takes weeks to find room on everyones calendar for the next round of interviews. These are all things youll never know about. I once waited four months for an interview with only a few emails exchanged in between. And I was the top candidateSo, next time youre stuck in the waiting game, other than sending an occasional note or making a phone call, your only real job is to wait. And breathe. And do your b est to stay sane.

8 effective ways to get back on track after failure
8 effective ways to get back on track after failure8 effective ways to get back on track after failureA couple of weeks ago you were on your A game. You would workout 3 to 5 days a week, eat a clean healthy diet, meet targets in your professional work, sleep well and wake up early in the morning- motivated and pumped to take on any challenge thrown at you during the day.But then, in a moment of weakness, you messed up and went on a binge. It seems like your old bad habits are beginning to come back into your life again. For whatever reason- a vacation, relationship breakup, illness, injury and so on- you fell off your diet plan, skipped workouts, fell behind in the quality of your work and lost the motivation to take good care of your life. Now youre stuck in a downward spiral of negativity because it seems like all the progress youve made may be ruined. If you can relate to this scenario, you know how tough it can be to get back on track after you messed up.But, its possible. Here are 8 effective and powerful strategies that will help you get back on track today 1. Identify the root cause of your failure. If I had an hour to solve a problem, Id spend 55 minutes thinking about the problem and 5 minutes thinking about solutions. Albert EinsteinPopular advice on how to get back on track with your life typically starts off with tactics.Whilst these may help you in the short-term, youll find that in fruchtwein cases a few weeks or months later, youll be back to your old ways once again. This is simply because the root cause of why you messed up was never identified and addressed first. What was your emotional state at the time of the slip-up? What thoughts were running through your mind before you fell off track? What was going on in your life when you made that mistake? If you do enough due diligence, youll discover that there are common triggers that cause you to fail. These include but are leid limited to the followingStress from life changes and relationship issues.Bored om and frustration with lack of progress.Injury or illness.Drastic change in environment i.e. vacation, going to a specific venue, change in home address etc.Trying to do too much too quickly.Take some time off to reflect on and identify the triggers that cause your habits to fail. You may uncover some unique strategies that work well for you.For example, if you discover that the boredom of eating the same food everyday caused you to binge eat, then you could try fitting in new healthy recipes, meal times and so on to deal with this.As simple and obvious as this may seem, this will lay the proper foundation for the other strategies to help you get back on track and stick with your habits over the long run.2. Create a Schedule and stick to itUnless commitment is made, there are only promises and hopes but no plans. Peter DruckerDo you have a schedule to fit in these habits in your life? If not, you should seriously consider doing so.The power of having a schedule cannot be overstated .For example, I know that every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I will be in my local gym at 7.30 a.m. for my prepared strength training workout. If for whatever reason, I mess up and miss my workout on Wednesday, I already have a schedule and plan in distributions-mix to get back on track for the Friday workout.Business carries on as usual because the decision-making process has already been made.I already know exactly what, where and when I will be taking action next time. 1Practice If you havent already done this, simply block and fit in your habits into your calendar.Be very specific about what you will be doing, where it will take place and when you will be making it happen.A pro-tip here is to build in buffer zones in your calendar to allow for potential slip-ups and failures.Sticking to a schedule will help prevent you from beating yourself up after messing up, re-engage with and stay focused on the habit at the next opportune time.3. Use your current habits to restart the behav iorInstead of building the habit back up from scratch, why not use the momentum of your current habits?Typically, our habits follow a behaviour pattern set off by a trigger or reminder. For example, lets say immediately after you get home from work, you walk into your bedroom, change into comfortable clothes, sit down on your couch and watch your favourite TV show.In this scenario, your current habit of walking into your bedroom immediately after getting back home from work triggers your next habit of changing from your work clothes to more comfortable clothing which also triggers the next habit- watching your favourite TV show.Obviously, this could be counterproductive behavior especially if youre trying to be more productive and go to the gym in the evening. To avoid falling into this unproductive relaxation mode and restart your exercise habit, after you walk into your bedroom, you could change into workout clothing. Then after putting on your running shoes, immediately turn around and walk outside the house to go for a run or to the gym. This strategy can also be applied to any other habits youre trying to get back on track with consistently.Simply look for current habits you already have on autopilot and use them as a reminder for those you would like to build up again.4. Get Back to the basicsIts tempting to try to do too much too quickly, especially when youre trying to get back on track quickly. But, this is usually counterproductive for making progress.Depending on how far youve slipped up, you may have to get back to the bare basics and build up overtime to a sustainable routine. Are you trying to get back on track with your diet? Instead of worrying so much about strict diets and foods to avoid, why not focus on portion sizes and tracking simple calories for now.Are you trying to get back on track with your writing? Instead of worrying so much about finishing that in-depth article or book, why not focus on writing a few basic journal pieces for now.Im su re you can think of several relatable examples in your life. The key point here is to strip the complexity from the habit and make it as difficult as possible to not get started consistently.5. Embrace imperfect startsIf I waited for perfection, I would never write a word.? Margaret AtwoodSo often we think we need to have everything in the perfect order before we can get started- the perfect work out, the perfect tools, the perfect plan and so on.The mindset behind this thinking is that the only way to do things in the beginning is the best way. But, is this true?If youd like to start meditating again, is it better to wait to figure out the best techniques or simply just go into a quiet room, sit down, close your eyes and focus on your breath? If youd like to start eating healthy again, is it better to wait geschiebemergel you have the perfect strict diet to eat clean 7 days a week or eat healthy 3 days a week with the occasional off days?Instead of worrying about doing it right the f irst time, why not simply get started right now.Once you get back on track and build up consistency with the habit, you can figure out how to do it better overtime.Remember its easier to make changes once youre already in motion.6. Change your environmentIs your current environment designed for success or failure?Your immediate environment doesnt just include people, but also items, colours, sounds and the like, that trigger your behaviours. Most importantly, a well designed environment can help you change your habits without relying too much on willpower or fickle motivation. On the flip-side, a poorly designed environment will cause your habits to fail time and time again. For example, keeping bags of chips and cookies around your bedroom and kitchen cupboard makes it easier for you to binge eat and snack late at night.Ideally, we would like our environment to work to our advantage. Here are a few examples of how to use this to get back on track with your habitsWant to get bed earlier and sleep more? An hour before bed, turn off all electronics and have a book in hand to read till you sleep.Want to eat more green vegetables? Use dark green plates (or darker colours in general). Research has shown that we tend to eat more portions of food types that match the colour of the plates we use. 2Want to exercise more? Pack your gym clothes in a bag the night before the workout and place them right next to your bedroom door.Evidently, what works best for me may not work best for you.Ive personally discovered that I get much more out of my writing and workouts whenever I have my headphones plugged in with music playing. On the off days that I dont use this strategy, my productivity doesnt quite reach its peak levels. This is a subtle environmental change I make on a daily basis that helps me stick to my habits and make consistent progress everyday.Make the necessary changes to your environment to make it easier for you get back on track quickly.7. Keep yourself accountable. It can be a real challenge to get back on track, particularly if you dont have any accountability to anyone who is counting on you to show up.These people are easy to find. They could be members of a public or private forum, your friends or family, teammates and work colleagues. Or, even yourself. An effective way to keep yourself accountable is to start a journal. For example, if youre trying to lose weight, you could create a notebook where you keep a food journal. Inside this journal, you could write down the date and number of days completed including what you eat as well as your cravings and struggles. As the number of days gets higher, youll naturally try your best to keep the chain of days going without messing up.If you do actually mess up, you could use your notes to look for trends and uncover the root causes of the failure to prevent it from happening again.8. Try a different approachIf youve tried and messed up on sticking to a habit several times in the past, you should co nsider trying a different approach. For example, if weight loss goal setting discourages you from taking action, you could try taking action without the goals and focus instead on building systems that will give you similar results as a by-product i.e. workouts per week, meals per day and so on.Likewise, if waking up at 5 a.m. in the morning to start writing or working on your business causes you to burnout after a couple of week, you could try working at 11 a.m instead.Sometimes, what works for most people, including best practices may not work well for you.Mix things up and find a different approach that meshes well with you.Sometimes, trying different approaches may not work because the initial reasons and passion for sticking to the habit are no longer as important to you as they used to be.If this is the case, you may need to make the difficult decision to let go of that particular habit for now.Its Never Too Late to Get Back on TrackSupposing you have tried and failed again and again. You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing we call failure is not the falling down, but the staying down. - Mary PickfordWeve all messed up and fallen behind on our goals- yes, that includes the people you look up to and aspire to be like, theyre not superhuman either. Its not always easy to get back on track, but it is possible if you make a commitment to do so.Some days you will feel like youre making forward progress, whilst on the other days it will seem like youre taking two steps backwards. No matter the case, in the grand scheme of things, if you get back on track when you mess up, grind it out and stick to the plan, you may actually end up even further ahead than you ever imagined.Mayo Oshin writes atMayoOshin.com, where he shares practical self-improvement ideas and proven science for better health, productivity and creativity. To get practical ideas on how to stop procrastinating and build healthy habits, you can join his free weekly newsletterh ere.A version of thisarticleoriginally appeared atmayooshin.comas The 8 Most Effective Ways to Get Back on Track After You Messed Up (And Finally Stay There).

For example, mention a time when your efficiency andability to multitask helped you complete an assignment a week beforethedeadline. If youre still not sure how to frame your response, consider focusing on one of these areas Speed and accuracy If you work quickly and efficiently, you might mention this in y our answer, especially if the job requires meeting tight deadlines. However, its important to impress the interviewer with your competency and accuracy, rather than just your speed. If you say you work at a fast and steady pace, emphasize the strategies you use to avoid making mistakes.Structuring your day You may want to focus on how you organize your day. Do you prefer to do your most difficult tasks in the morning? Do you prefer to focus on one assignment at a time, or multitask? You might also mention how many hours you typically work. If you are someone who always goes above and beyond, and stays late to complete tasks, say so. Working alone or in collaboration The employer might want to know whether you prefer to work solo or collaboratively. Think carefully about the job before answering this question. Most jobs require at least some collaboration, so even if you prefer towork alone, emphasize that you value others input.Taking direction Another important element of your work style is how you like to communicate with your boss. Do you prefer to beguided, or do you like to be given a task and left alone to complete it? Thinking about your ideal relationship with your employer will help both you and the interviewer decide whether you area good fit for the job. Your communication style If this job requires constant communication, you might want to emphasize how you communicate with employers, staff, and clients throughout the workday. Do you prefer tocommunicatebyemail, phone conversations, or face-to-face meetings? Again, think about what this job requires before you answer. Most jobs will require a combination of communication tactics. What Not to Do GiveOverly Specific, Rigid ResponsesUnless you can very precisely nail down both the company and the interviewers preferred work style, its best not to be too definitive. If you say, I work best alone and the manager wants a team player, youll have automatically disqualified yourself. UseClichsDuring int erviews, everyone is a hard worker, detail-oriented, and a team player. Its fine to claim these traits for yourself, but since these words and phrases are uttered so frequently, back them up with examples ifyouusethem. Be Dishonest or Fail to Answer the QuestionsWhile you do not want to be too specific and make yourself seem rigid, its also unwise to be so vague in your response that the interviewer doesnt get a sense of you as an employee. We all have preferences when it comes to our workplace. This is your moment to share yours. If you truly dislike morning meetings, or have some other quirk, itmaybeworthmentioning it in your response. Possible Follow-Up Questions Whats your work philosophy? What type of work environment do you prefer? How would you handle a hostile work environment? How would you handle it if you were working on a project with someone who had a very different work style to you?How do you like to work with managers?Whats your preferred communication style? Key Ta keaways DO RESEARCH The more you know about the companys work environment and style, the more youll be able to tailor your response to show that youd easily fit in.BE HONEST If you have one condition that must be met in order for you to work efficiently, its reasonable to mention it. For example, if you tend to have lots of questions at the start of a project, you might want to mention that.BEYOND CLICHS Examples are always more meaningful than a long string of descriptors (like hard worker) that hiring managers hear all the time in interviews.

We bring holiday stress upon ourselves, survey finds
We bring holiday stress upon ourselves, survey findsWe bring holiday stress upon ourselves, survey findsAmericans are pushed to the brink with holiday stress, overwhelmed by financial concerns, family events, gift shopping, and just trying to balance it all like so many spinning plates. Some of the pain is self-inflicted 1 in 4 say theyve taken on more than they can realistically get done, shows a new survey byVitalsmarts, a leadership training company.Ready to dropThe top 5 holiday causes of stress were found to be56% Keeping up with, well, everyone, from activities to expectations50% Money, or lack thereof46% Shopping.33% Family events26% Maintaining physical healthfruchtwein of us struggle to keep up with the schedules and pressures of non-holiday life, says Justin Hale, co-creator of Getting Things Done Training by VitalSmarts. When you pile on additional commitments and double your to-do list, your stress levels grow exponentially.Cant say noAs stressed as we say we are, it migh t not hurt if some of us slowed down a little. A fair number of respondents suffered from all-or-nothing attitudes when it came to holiday activities, which only contributed to the stress.27% percent never declined an invitation for a party or event10% say they had no rules for their health or diet during the holidays, with 44% figuring that theyd start dieting or eating healthy in January.10% said they drink to excess and always needed a designated driver after a holiday party.29% cant stick to a budget during the holidays and rely on a credit card.Nearly 60 percent of people dont have clear lists of their commitments and its hard to renegotiate commitments you dont remember making or dont keep track of, Hale said.It looks like there are a few areas we can help ourselves cut back to make the season happier instead of stuffing our gullets with as much food, alcohol, social events, and credit card debt as humanly possible. Slow holidays movement, anyone?

CX Designer Job Description
CX Designer Job DescriptionCX Designer Job DescriptionInterested in becoming - or hiring - a CX designer? Heres the scoop on this emerging role.User experience (UX) isnt just a buzzword its a priority for more and more companies. And the UX designer role is only growing in demand. But research for ur Creative gruppe of the Future program shows theres another creative position thats emerging as a business must-have customer experience designer or CX designer for short.A CX designer is responsible for creating satisfying or compelling experiences for users of a product, with a focus on reshaping the customer experience to maximize conversions. These individuals must have an expert understanding of touchpoints across the entire customer journey.Denis Dyli is the founder of Pivofy, a digital agency that specializes in designing and developing e-commerce websites. He has more than eight years of UX and user interface (UI) design and development experience, and most recently delved into customer experience design. We chatted with him about what it takes to be a CX designer and how managers can recruit the right talent for this role. What does your role as a CX designer entail? My main job is to design blueprints - including wireframes, roadmaps, workflows, personas and scenarios - of websites that have an enhanced customer experience and higher results on metrics such as conversion rates and customer engagement. I analyze the audience, customer behavior and what things affect their decision-making, and then build around ansicht key metrics. In a few words, I am a designer that solves problems. What path did you take to become a CX designer?I started my career as a developer. It is interesting because most of the people I know try to move from design to development. I did the opposite. And the reason was because I started seeing development as more mechanical than creative. I found out that most issues can be solved before the development starts, and was very enthusi astic about handling projects in the early stages. For a while, I was doing UX, UI and development. Being a developer is a huge plus for me because I know the potential and limits of applying technology. What hard and soft skills do you use regularly?Besides being creative, I have to listen carefully to the problems our clients are facing. Most of the time, issues get identified after long discussions about whole project workflows. We cant isolate problems and solve them separately. Instead, we have to see the big picture. Communication is as important as the ability to use UX and UI tools. What tools and platforms do you use in your job?Mostly, I use the Adobe Creative Suite (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Illustrator, and Photoshop). Recently, I am using a tool named UxPin, which allows me to create creative dynamic models for web and mobile.Whats the best part of the CX designer job?First, when you present a new effective and creative idea to the client and you get the wow response. Secon d, when the idea is applied and you see significant results, like higher conversion rates and customer engagement or longer time spent on the site.Whats the most challenging aspect of the role? There are certain practices that work very well for certain industries and others that dont. As an example, in the apparel industry, professional photos and good reviews are essential to improve conversion rates because the shopping process is mostly visual. In the auto parts industry, these two elements have minimal effect. What really matters here is the ability to easily find the exact part for a specific car. If the searching workflow and functionality are simple and precise, you have more chances to earn that customer. So, the most challenging aspect of my job is to identify the best practices of the particular industry and product early on the discovery phase.Any last tips for CX designers? You have to stay up to date with the most recent design and technology trends. It is also important to follow the leaders of UX and UI blogs to see what is new out there. Last but not least, keep apprised of updates from popular web giants such as Google, Facebook and Amazon. They do tons of research, tests and analyses when they update their platforms. Try to understand why they do what they do and then apply these practices in your future projects. Are you hiring creative professionals?
